讣文
November 23, 2009 on 6:22 pm | In 蛰居琐话 | 2 Comments讣文(obituary)在英语文学里占有一席之地,几年前读过一本专门介绍讣文的书 The Dead Beat(http://lily.wuxinan.net/archives/883)。看到新闻,杨宪益先生昨日去世,英国卫报也发了讣文,比起中文媒体的报道,实在觉得应该分享一下卫报这篇讣文。
卫报的讣文是这么开头的:
When they came during the Cultural Revolution to take away Yang Xianyi, China’s distinguished translator who has died aged 94, he had one regret – that he was hauled off to prison, accused of being a British spy, in his old slippers. “My only thought at that time,” he would recall, “was ‘why didn’t I change into proper shoes?'” Slippers were not the best footwear for four years (1968-72) in jail. It was typical of Yang not to make too much of his ordeal.
