讣文（obituary）在英语文学里占有一席之地，几年前读过一本专门介绍讣文的书 The Dead Beat（http://lily.wuxinan.net/archives/883）。看到新闻，杨宪益先生昨日去世，英国卫报也发了讣文，比起中文媒体的报道，实在觉得应该分享一下卫报这篇讣文。

卫报的讣文是这么开头的：

When they came during the Cultural Revolution to take away Yang Xianyi, China’s distinguished translator who has died aged 94, he had one regret – that he was hauled off to prison, accused of being a British spy, in his old slippers. “My only thought at that time,” he would recall, “was ‘why didn’t I change into proper shoes?'” Slippers were not the best footwear for four years (1968-72) in jail. It was typical of Yang not to make too much of his ordeal.
