作者David Kidd，1946年以密歇根大学交换学生的身份，到北京燕京大学（Peking’s Yenching University）学习中国诗歌，后在清华大学教英语。Peking Story记述1949年前后四年中他在北京的见闻经历，他的妻子是一位前清大家庭里的小姐。中文译本叫《毛家湾遗梦：1949年北京秘闻》，书名译得怪耸动。
