Close Range-Ranch loser

The Bunchgrass Edge of the World里那个最终活得比儿子长的老头,儿子飞机意外死了,以前被媳妇赶到只能住在pantry的老头子,在媳妇离开的后一分钟,立马搬回到原来楼上的卧室,”Stand around long enough you’d ge to sit down”,现实的势利,真实得让人苦笑。

在Close Range收集的11个短篇里,最别致的是Job History,简洁明了,像一部新闻纪录片,记述了Leeland Lee几十年里的搬迁和从事的各种工作,pumping gas at Service Station, setting up his own business, like a local ranch supply store, working in a road construction crew, a job in Meat Locker and Processing, cutting animals and wrapping packages, driving truck, raising hogs,…… at the end, a cooker in a local cafe, grilling beef and frying chicken,读至最后一行,很有些讶异于这个无任何惊奇如流水账般的故事,翻回到标题页,Job history,又有种恍然大悟的清醒,一切为了生存,任何一个平凡人颠沛起伏的生活,琐碎无奇,却都是值得记录的故事,因为活着,就是最大的主题。

在读Close Range的中间,无意在网上看到一篇关于该书的书评,作者批评Annie Proulx的Wyoming stories是写过游客看的,“as they drove through the state, and eavesdropped on the local bullshitters- getting all the surface details but lacking any true insight”,最后还引用了Brokeback mountain的结尾,“There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can’t fix it you’ve got to stand it.Unfortunately, that advice applies to her readers, as well.
